TV, Medical & Science: Heart, Skin, Lungs, Sklungs? House M.D. Prophecy Of A Fluidless Organ Preservation Box!!!

Lung in a box, in House M.D. Season 8 Episode 2 Transplant
Image from Fox
You all know how much I love House M.D., hence my PhD research subject. That said, I used to always visit and revisit Polite Dissent after every episode to get some professional medical knowledge, so that I do not get carried away by the awesomeness of the show. One episode which I remember particularly well, Season 8 Episode 2 Transplant, carried a fatal "design flaw" in their production, and that was the printine plexiglass organ preservation box shown in the above photo.

Polite Dissent has the following comments which I highlighted in the screen capture below:

Screencap of Polite Dissent
Image from Polite Dissent
I agreed with Polite Dissent. How can an organ survive without blood and fluid around the organ to keep it from drying up? Until today, I realised I was wrong when I saw the image below,

Heart beating in the organ preservation box.
Image from IFL Science
Here's direct quotation of parts of the IFL Science article:

"In the short term they’ll open the field," commented Korkut Uygun, a transplant surgeon from Massachusetts General Hospital, to the Technology Review. Uygun thinks that one day we'll have the technology to restore other organs, such as livers, up to an hour after they have undergone circulatory death, not minutes. And so far, there are 15 cases of the "heart in a box" successfully reanimating a heart from a donor after they've died.

The system could increase the number of hearts that are transported, overcoming issues such as the time limit heart porters have when transporting a chilled heart. Typically, an organ is cooled to about 4°C (39°F) to slow down the tissue's metabolic rate and the rate of degenerative processes. Lungs, for example, only last three to six hours on ice – whereas the Transmedics device preserves lungs for 24 hours without needing to cool the organ down.

There is no blood flow around a cooled organ so it is susceptible to damage, and there is no way to test its function. This is especially critical for a patient about to undergo the invasive surgery to receive it, and the months of adapting to the new organ afterwards.

So yeah, that House M.D. prophecy has come true, again!!! After that black president of the United States one, which I will share in the near future.

TV: Watch Free American TV Online

Image from Cucirca
Always busy on Mondays and Tuesdays these days, and will continue to be for another 5 weeks as I have to prepare lecture notes for a university course I am teaching. So on Wednesdays, I want to chill out a bit and watch a bit of TV before I head back to working on my PhD project.

Every Thursday and Friday, my wife and I love to sit on the sofa and watch Gordon Ramsey and co. testing their contestants on MasterChef Season 3, but sometimes we missed it for one reason or another. Do you want to catch what you have missed too? Now I have a way!

Cucirca offers quite a number of good TV programmes, feel free to go and find the ones you like.

Image from Cucirca
The instructions to viewing is pretty direct, just find the show, click on the episode you want,

Image from Cucirca
then click the cross at the top right corner to close the ad ( I use Chrome with AdBlock so the ads don't show),

Image from Cucirca
click on "Continue to File",

Image from Cucirca

press play and start watching! The quality is real good too!

What you don't get, are the subtitle and to watch this on a Samsung Smart TV. I've tried it, it just keeps going to an ad website. I think Samsung really need to improve its web browser functionalities, otherwise, it will just be another dumb TV.

TV & Technology: You Who Came From The Stars (aka YWCFTS) feat. LINE & Didier Dubot

별에서 온 그대 (Korean Drama: You Who Came From The Stars)
Image from LINE

I have read hundreds and hundreds of news articles these days, there are big news but nothing really interests me (until...).

Swallowed and Digested
Image from appleinsider
Facebook's acquisition of Whatsapp was big, a huge success story on Whatsapp's part because of the price Facebook paid, and it was a smart move on Whatsapp as its competition is getting stiffer and stiffer. Many of you know that I am not a big fan of Whatsapp and instead I support LINE. That's because Whatsapp's "Less is more" philosophy just doesn't work for me, probably increasingly for the rest of the world too. As other instant messaging (IM) apps such as LINE and WeChat take the stage, Whatsapp was bound to be ousted sooner or later. In my past article Technology & Economics: Nothing Is Too Big To Fail, I predicted LINE to be "the next big thing", and I was right.

Image from mbn.co.kr

Recently the Korean drama 별에서 온 그대 You Who Came From The Stars took LINE and many fashion brands, such as Didier Dubot, up to a whole new level due to its overwhelming popularity. Product placement in action! Inarguably, actress Jeon Ji-Hyun has been monumental in the success of the entire project.

Spokewoman Jeon Ji-Hyun
Images from Didier Dubot Korea Facebook
The fans have even gone the extra mile to research on every piece of clothing, shoes and accessories Jeon Ji-Hyun has worn in the drama!!! You may want to take a look at one of the researches here.

Image from weixin.qq

Image from weixin.qq

Having up to 12 different looks in an episode basically makes it a grand solo fashion show for the actress!!! What is most impressive, personally speaking, is that she has the magic to bring the very best look out of each and every one of the pieces, so much that she even put the actual models in shame!!

Image from LINE
LINE has not only sponsored the show, but also released free stickers for the actress and the main characters of the show, multiplying the positive effect by a thousand times!

Free stickers of the scenes in the show
Image from pic.pimg.tw
Songs from the show, particularly My Destiny by Lyn and Hello/Goodbye by Hyorin, received 793,605+ and 676,444+ downloads in South Korea alone!! The enthusiasm from the fans are pouring into YouTube with their self-made translated romanised MTV. It is almost impossible to miss versions of Vietnamese, Thai, Spanish and Chinese versions when these song names are looked up.

As the show reaches the final 2 episodes, the audience shares and ratings are hitting all time high at 30.8%!!

Will this male alien-female girl relationship bears fruit? We shall see on the 26th and 27th February, which is just 3 more days away!!!

Food: How To Open An Oyster? The World Is Your Oyster!

My hand, my glove and an opened Fine de Claire
Image from Locky's English Playground
We know oysters taste spectacular, we know we can have them freshly from the shell or cooked, with lemon juice or with cocktail sauce, but lucky for most people who can spend on such delicacy, we need not worry about cracking the shell. I used to think cracking the shell as an exhausting procedure, but now that I have learnt the techniques and discovered the hidden tricks, it's like shooting fish in a barrel!

I have made a video of my own for this, do check it out!

Here's a summary of my tips and tricks:

  1. A strong oyster knife will save you much energy
  2. An oyster holder also multiplies your strength
  3. If an oyster on the oyster holder isn't giving you a good angle, then just put the oyster on flat surface
  4. It's twisting and rotating your knife before leveraging, not the other way round.
  5. Cut the scallop and your oyster will release the shell.

And here's the oyster anatomy for your reference:

If you still think my video isn't good enough, well then, learn from my oyster shucker teacher, Suki, from Taylor Shellfish Farm in this episode of Dirty Jobs by Mike Rowe. Trust me, it is great fun to watch!

So, once you have learnt the skills and tricks, the world is your oyster!!!

Unwanted oyster shells are actually good for the environment?

Do you know that unwanted oyster shell can actually clean the sea? No? Check out my article back in May 2009.

Not enough info? I will write more about oysters next time if chances arrive.

Auto: Tesla Model S on National Geographic

Sunroof anyone?
Image from Tesla

Feeling bored and in need of something to watch? Wanna have some green knowledge for the Christmas? I happened to feel this way in this Christmas morning, and so I went to find something to watch on YouTube.

Almost buttonless interactive touchscreen which controls all of the car!!!
Image from Tesla
Fully Robotic Model S Production
Image from National Geographic

As I have always been a late stock investor, knowing more about a company which I am highly interested is extremely important. I can say I already know a lot about Tesla Motor, but I still wanna learn more about the visionary company, their state-of-the-art electric vehicles, the robotic manufacturing process and their hi-tech factories.

Image from National Geographic

I have watched a lot of videos about the Tesla Model S, but it is only today that I found this documentary by National Geographic. Not too many people can enter the factory to see the entire production with their own eyes, so being able to see it on video is monumental to my decision to buy the US stock. This 47-minute documentary definitely is a great watch for the holidays!

Now I just need to analyse all those financial data in order to justify the moment and price of purchase.

Science & TV: Fun Facts About Christmas We All Should Know -- Virgin Birth!

Is this true? Let's see!
Image from buzzdixon

Hello! Everyone! It's Christmas again! Remember that in 2009, I wrote Vocabulary: Christmas Stuff and in 2011, I wrote Vocabulary: Christmas Words To Learn and  taught you guys some words related to Christmas? If you don't, do feel free to check out the post. It has some excellent Mr. Bean videos there!

Today, I want to share some fun facts about Christmas!

First, let's check out this video.

What about it? In the movie, the female dinosaurs were able to breed without a male dinosaur. So what's special about turkey? Well, female turkeys can give birth to babies without the fertilisation of a male counterpart! It's called parthenogenesis or commonly known as "virgin birth".

Although the chances is not very high, 19% according to the video and few will actually hatch, it is one miracle of nature!!

"Life Finds A Way" -- Dr. Malcolm @ Jurassic Park

In fact, virgin birth does not only happen in turkey, it occurs in honeybees, flatworms, snails, sharks and gecko.

What about humans? Can humans reproduce through parthenogenesis? Wanna ask Dr. House about it? He did talk about it in this Season 5 Episode 11.

Dr. House said "no", but what does science say?

Well, there you have it! Virgin birth has never been proven to occur in humans but it is scientifically plausible though extremely rare.

So, don't even think about faking anyone this Christmas with "virgin birth"!

Have a happy Christmas Eve and Merry Christmas!

Vocabulary:
virgin birth -- (n) see parthenogenesis
parthenogenesis -- (n) [U] a form of asexual reproduction in which growth and development of embryos occur without fertilization.

News & Opinions: HKTV and the Hong Kong People

Image from Locky's English Playground
Hypothetical situation:

If you are invited by an important staff of a university to apply for their research program, that staff promised you that as long as you have done your research proposal well enough, you will be admitted. There is no limit to the number of intake. Would you do it?

Let say your answer is 'yes'. You spent your own time and truckloads of hard-earned money for your research, submitted your proposal and then you waited.

While you waited and waited, you continued to produce excellent research results and earned city-wide support and recognition.

Then after precisely 3 years, that is May 2013, you finally heard some sort of a follow-up phone call from the university, asking you,

"If we intend to change our intake/ proposal marking scheme, that we might choose 2 applicants out of 3, what are your opinions?"

You gave your personal views on that, the university thanked you, and you hanged up.

Five months later, that is October 2013, you heard from the university that they have decided to pick 2 applicants out of 3, however, they did not reveal any details of their new proposal marking scheme or allow any amendments of the proposals.

After five more months, the results were out, and you failed to qualify for the program.

Naturally, you want to know why you failed and which parts you have not done enough, but the university simply said,

"The details of the intake/ proposal marking scheme is strictly confidential; the panel has had serious discussions over a bundle of considerations. In general, we can tell you that your competitiveness is not as strong as the other two."

And your name is... Ricky Wong.

I don't usually talk about politics and I don't want to rephrase every argument to pretend that I have written something new, I just want to share some useful English which appeared in this ordeal with those of you who seldom read English newspapers.

ordeal -- (n)[C] a very unpleasant and painful or difficult experience:

Here's what you can learn if you do read newspapers,
Tens of thousands of protesters march down the streets of Hong Kong. Scores of people protested against the government's decision to not grant a broadcasting license to HKTV, in a move which they say will hamper the city's creative industry. (AFP/AARON TAM)

Thousands of people have taken to the streets of Hong Kong to protest against what they see as a lack of government transparency and accountability.

Police put the turnout at 20,000, while organisers said 120,000 were there.

The controversy was sparked last week when the government declined to grant a free-to-air licence to Hong Kong Television Network.

Critics of the government have urged officials to give a clear account of why the licence was refused.

take to the streets -- When people take to the streets, they express their opposition to something in public and often violently:
transparency -- (n)[U] the quality of being done in an open way without secrets:
accountability -- (n)[U] Someone who is accountable is completely responsible for what they do and must be able to give a satisfactory reason for it:
turnout -- (n)[C] the number of people who are present at an event, especially the number who go to vote at an election:

free-to-air -- (adj) Free-to-air television or radio programmes are broadcast to everyone and can be watched for free.
critic -- (n)[C] someone who says that they do not approve of someone or something:

The demonstration reflects concerns that Hong Kong’s policies favor big business, lack accountability and may undermine freedom of speech in the semi-autonomous Chinese city. A record wealth gap has spurred popular discontent and driven down poll ratings for Leung, the city’s last leader to be chosen by a committee of business and civic groups before full democracy promised in 2017.

Thunderous applause greeted footage of crime thriller The Borderline and infotainment show The Challenge at the protest, a continuation of Sunday's rally against a government decision to leave HKTV out of the free-television market while issuing licences to i-Cable's Fantastic Television and PCCW's HK Television Entertainment.

......

Anthony Wong Chau-Sang, newly elected member of the Arts Development Council, said the incident had affected at least 60 students from the Academy for Performing Arts, where he was chairman of the alumni. "This is clearly a black-box operation."

-- SCMP

thunderous -- (adj)[before noun] extremely loud:
applause -- (n)[U] the sound of people clapping their hands repeatedly to show enjoyment or approval of something such as a performance or speech:
infotainment -- (n)[U] (in television) the reporting of news and facts in an entertaining and humorous way rather than providing real information:

Gregory So Kam-Leung, Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development (left)
announced the refusal to Ricky Wong (right) and HKTV's license application
Image from SCMP

The Hong Kong government last week gave in-principle approval for Fantastic Television and HK Television Entertainment Company’s applications for free-to-air television broadcast licences, but denied HKTV’s application, as it was deemed the weakest applicant of the three.

Authorities had on Saturday reiterated that “political considerations” played no part in their decision to deny HKTV a broadcast licence, pointing out that the decision-making process was “fair and followed proper procedure”.

-- Channel News Asia

in principle -- If you agree with or believe something in principle, you agree with the idea in general, although you might not support it in reality or in every situation:
deem -- (vb) [T not continuous] formal to consider or judge something in a particular way:
reiterate -- (vb)[T] to say something again, once or several times:

HKTV staff union chairman Yeung Chi-ho told a phone-in program they had asked the government to explain its decision within seven days.

"The refusal of a license has shattered our dreams, but we don't want to cause chaos," he said. "We only want to express our opinions in a peaceful manner."

-- The Standard

shatter -- (vb) [T] to end or severely damage something:
chaos -- (n) [U] a state of total confusion with no order:

Pan-democratic legislators will raise a motion to invoke the Legislative Council (Powers and Privileges) Ordinance to pressure the government to disclose more details into its decision not to grant a free-TV license to HKTV.

The Labour Party's Cyd Ho Sau-lan said she has sent a letter to information technology and broadcasting panel chairman Raymond Wong Yuk-man asking to raise the non-binding motion at the panel's special meeting on November 8.

......

The Democratic Party's Sin Chung-kai said it is unfair for the government to cite confidentiality to avoid explaining the issue, which is of great public interest.

-- The Standard

motion -- (n)[C] a formal suggestion made, discussed, and voted on at a meeting:
ordinance -- (n)[C] formal a law or rule made by a government or authority:
binding -- (adj) (especially of an agreement) that cannot be legally avoided or stopped:
cite -- (vb)[T] formal to mention something as proof for a theory or as a reason why something has happened:
confidentiality -- (n)[U] the state of being confidential:

Image from TVB.com

"It could not be a case of all comers being welcomed," Leung said. "We had to evaluate whether the applicants fulfilled specified criteria and to what extent they meet the requirements.

"Our consideration was comprehensive. We definitely had no political agenda, no political consideration."

He added: "We knew that in making the decision, it would be hard to please everyone."

Referring to Wong's move to seek a judicial review, Leung said the government was ready to present its rationale for the rejection of HKTV.

Leung also said the government wanted to increase the number of free- to-air TV licenses in an orderly and progressive manner so there would be healthy competition rather than excessive rivalry.

"We don't want to see a flash in the pan," he said. "We want to see that the progress made is persistent and lasts long term."

......

And Executive Council discussions had to be confidential, he said, adding: "When government Cabinets in other countries hold meetings they are confidential too, no matter what is on the agendas."

-- The Standard

judicial -- (adj) involving a law court:
rationale -- (n) [C or U] the reasons or intentions for a particular set of thoughts or actions:
progressive -- (adj) developing or happening gradually:
rivalry -- (n)[C or U] a situation in which people, businesses, etc. compete with each other for the same thing:
a flash in the pan -- (idioms) something that happens only once or for a short time and will not be repeated
cabinet -- (n) [C usually singular, + sing/pl verb] (GOVERNMENT) (usually Cabinet) a small group of the most important people elected to government, who make the main decisions about what should happen:

Ricky Wong
Image from TVB.com

Wong said the government told it any amendment to its application would be seen as a new application. "You change the rules, but ban me from making changes?" Wong asked.

"It was known then that the licenses would not be issued at the same time."

Wong said that it was only a notice and not a request for more information. He said that any change in the number of licenses to be issued would be regarded as a policy change and, hence, a public consultation was required.

"Does the law override policy or does policy override the law?" Wong asked. "Or is the chief executive above all?"

Wong said that in 1988, the government decided to open the broadcasting market and stated clearly there would be no limit to licenses.

What the chief executive-in-council did last week was to override that decision without any public consultation.

Wong said he refused to accept suggestions that HKTV ranked third behind i-Cable's Fantastic Television and PCCW's Hong Kong Television Entertainment. No government official has contacted him since rejection of his application.

"The government should not only explain to me, but also to all Hongkongers," Wong said.

He added: "I was not angry and have been calm. But don't infuriate me ... my psychological state has reached the tipping point."
-- The Standard

amendment -- (n)[U or C] a change or changes made to the words of a text:
public consultation -- (n)[C] or simply consultation, is a regulatory process by which the public's input on matters affecting them is sought. Its main goals are in improving the efficiency, transparency and public involvement in large-scale projects or laws and policies.
infuriate -- (vb) to make someone extremely angry:
psychological -- (adj) relating to the human mind and feelings:
tipping point -- (n)[S or U] the time at which a change or an effect cannot be stopped:

One important lesson I've learnt from Ricky Wong's incident is that, if Ricky Wong can lose HK$900 million and is still fighting, how much worse our luck can be as compared to his? What excuses can we still give ourselves for giving up?

We should all fight for what's right!
