Health and Medical: Understanding Cancer & Metastasis

House and Wilson (the oncologist)
Bromantic = (brother + romantic)
Image from articulatelove.files.wordpress.com
Suddenly filled with disease terms in my head after watching yet another 5 episodes of House M.D. and this round, metastasis got my attention. In particular as Dr. House puts it,

"Cancer plays the field. Metastasis is just a fancy word for 'screws around.'"

Which kind of summarises the key idea of metastasis.

How does cancer screws around? Or before that, what is cancer?

Before we start to do our reading, I found a video on YouTube that can enhance our understanding first, so that the later reading can be absorbed much easier. I have added a playlist which includes 5 videos so far, do watch them all.

I have put this one separately in case you have want to jump ahead.

There is of course a lot of information elsewhere on the internet, but I would like to pick out a few key points which are useful and interest me.

To begin with, cancer begins when a cell suffers progressive genetic damages to produce a cancer stem cell is able to continuously duplicates itself (called mitosis) and  the site of where the cancer originates is called "primary tumor". If a cancer stem cell does travel to another part of the same organ, it will produce again forming nodules called 'daughter tumors' and the process is called local metastasis. [1]

If a cancer stem cell survives its travel to another organ and develops into a tumor in that organ, the tumor is called a secondary tumor or a metastatic tumor. Such new tumors will remain as the cells of the organ it originates from. Meaning if a pancreas cancer metastasizes to the lungs, it is called metastatic pancreas cancer, and the cells in the secondary tumors in the lungs are still cells of the pancreas. [1]

Here a diagram of the routes of cancer metastasis:
Main sites of metastases for some common cancer types.
Primary cancers are denoted by "
...cancer" and their main
metastasis sites are denoted by "
...metastases
".
Image from Wikipedia
As such, abnormal breast cells could be found in the liver, lungs, brain or bones. Theory has it that "diagnosis of metastatic cancers is only possible after the event of metastasis", in other words, metastatic cancers are detectable after they have occurred. [1]

Metastatic cancers are treatable by various methods, "radiosurgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, biological therapy, hormone therapy, surgery or a combination of these", depending on the type, size, location, spread, stage of the cancer.[1]

Finally, as English learners, you may ask, "do we actually need to know these?"

My answer will be, yes, because these are in fact very common knowledge amount the English speakers, and by knowing them, you will definitely benefit yourself in discussions, let alone the crucial knowledge you have gained.

By the way, a doctor who practices oncology (study of cancer) is an oncologist.

Technology: Tricks and Tips for Galaxy SII?

Samsung Galaxy SII (left) iPhone 4/4S (right) screen size comparison

Student Ella has been throwing me various questions about using her new Galaxy SII, which has inspired me to write the entry Technology: How to Use Your Galaxy SII? (Updated 6th Dec, 2011), then she has inspired me once again to write this one after asking me how to change the brightness on the home page! Although she had already found out the answer to that, I have found many more tricks from YouTube!

These tricks are really good and really does make using Galaxy SII even faster and cooler! I sure love my Galaxy SII now because it is so smart!!

iPhone fans waiting for The Next Big Thing

But before we watch the video, let me first steal the limelight and give you two personal tips!

Data Network Mode

Flight Mode @ Phone options
Image from img.gadgetian.com

When I get home, the first thing I do is to switch off the 3G and use Wi-Fi, but going into Settings is too much of pressing. Then I discovered a very quick way to switch on and off the 3G.

All you need to do is, same as the Flight mode, we hold the button on the right and the Phone options menu will pop up, and press Data network mode, it will then activate or deactivate your 3G, just press 2 buttons in total!! Amazing!

Switch On and Off Wi-Fi
To switch on and off the Wi-Fi, just repeat what I have said in the earlier entry,

Quick Drag-Down Settings
Image from cdn-static.cnet.co.uk

Go to Desktop page --> Touch the black bar on the top --> Drag down the bar

From here, you can press the buttons to activate / deactivate your Wi-Fi.

Now the following video is one of the best I have watched! The accent is quite Indian but it is not a bad practice for your ears! Give it a whirl!

Sorry iOS 5. You may look prettier but you are just not good enough in terms of flexibility.

And, Galaxy SII is not even at full potential yet!!!!!

Why? Because it is still running Gingerbread! (2.3.5).

Can you imagine how good things will get when SII gets Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0)? Well, no need to wait, here's how it will look like!!!!!!

I LOVE MY SII!!!! SII-ians! Congratulations!

TV & Academic Research: Heroes VS Fringe (Season 1 comparisons)

One of the advantages of doing assignments is that if it is well-written, I can post it to benefit my readers, or maybe others who need to do similar tasks.

The assignment below requires me to make a comparison of the two sci-fi TV series Heroes and Fringe. If you have seen them, you might also have the same feeling as I have.

Here is an assignment I wrote which came back with an 'A' grade!

Image from rollmops.files.wordpress.com

Both being science fiction television series, Heroes and Fringe adopt paranormal and interlocking mysteries as the plot development, kicking off with the phenomena which are unexplainable with modern day normal-stream science to draw viewers’ attention. What gives Heroes the competitive edge over Fringe is the scaffolding of the network of characters in the first episode. Each character is unique in their superpowers and the weight of the story is evenly spread amongst the characters that are located in different parts of the world. The potential in developing the threads of the story through each character is huge. Viewers are tempted to see how each of the characters will develop their own stories and how they will eventually unite. Fringe on the other hand has a pattern which is regular and predictable, that is it focuses one individual case in one episode.
Image from geek-news.mtv
TV series are being watched by viewers globally and viewers love to see their countrymen appearing on the small screen as much as the big screen. The producers of Heroes understand this perfectly. In terms of marketing potentials, Heroes displays several large cultures in the series such as the Indian and the Japanese cultures which definitely suit the taste of the Asian viewers and the massive Asian markets whereas Fringe remains a typical wholly America-based FBI-detective TV series. Heroes also defeats Fringe in terms of depth of thought. Heroes addresses the issues or even conflicts between traditional beliefs and science and in some ways attempts a merger of two, conceptually it is more intriguing to look into the deep philosophical beliefs such as destiny and meanings in life versus the opposing belief of science and evolution than sole paranormal mysteries in Fringe.
In terms of filming techniques, Heroes makes use of low-light shooting, night scenes and low key tone in daylight, pictures are tinted with slight purple, dark blue or grey through the use of lens filters, which creates various mysterious atmospheres throughout the episodes; Fringe does not apply lighting effects and filters as often as Heroes does. The use of a recurring sword-like symbol in some scenes of Heroes to trigger the viewers’ pursuit of the story is effective but is slightly overdone at times; Fringe applies similar technique by using frog, leaf and handprint in between scenes to achieve the same result, but because they are not shown in the scenes, it is doubtful that these symbols will be explained in the future.

As you can see, this is the writing style expected at the Master's level, highly densed, highly nominalised, and very little non-sense. If you want to know how to write like this, please revise my earlier articles on titled
"Business Writing: How to write like a pro? -- Part 0,1,2,3,4"

Vocabulary:
paranormal -- (adj) impossible to explain by known natural forces or by science
interlocking -- (adj) firmly joined together, especially by one part fitting into another
be tempted -- (vb) to want something or to want to do something
intriguing -- (adj) very interesting because of being unusual or mysterious
tint -- (vb) [T] to slightly change the colour of something
pursuit -- (n) [U] when you try to achieve a plan, activity or situation, usually over a long period of time

Technology: How to Use Your Galaxy SII? (Updated 6th Dec, 2011)

Samsung Galaxy SII (Model GT-I9100)
Image from techwench.com
Following my blog entries on the Galaxy SII (See Resources below), at least two of my student Ella and Angus have bought their new favourite. But there are a number of questions on how to operate and protect the phone and so I decide to write an entry on this.

Upgrading to Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread
Android's OS comes in a series of cute names, here are the names of the more popular versions,

  • 2.3.x Gingerbread (for smartphones)
  • 3.0.x Honeycomb (for tablets)
  • 4.0.x Ice Cream Sandwich (for newer smartphones such as Galaxy Nexus)

Image from wikia
Image from geeky-gadgets.com
Image from androidcentral

My SII came with with the older 2.3.3 and needed to be updated. If yours is also running the older version, I highly recommend that you upgrade it to the current 2.3.5 as it will give it more flexibility in managing your phone.

To see your current version:

Go to Settings --> About phone --> Software update --> Android version

To upgrade,
Go to Settings --> About phone --> Software update --> Android version --> Update

The really good thing about the Android phones update is that it doesn't need to plug into the computer with a wire, which is something that iPhone has just recently managed to do! Slow!

Power Saving Mode
After the upgrade, the operation should be smoother and battery use should be slower. But if you are still experiencing battery drain issue (because you start too many applications, using too much energy on the screen, leaving WiFi on at all time, etc.) the easiest way is to switch on your Power Saving Mode.

Go to Settings --> Power saving mode --> check the box at Use Power saving mode

After that,
Go to Settings --> Power saving mode --> Custom Power saving settings

and check every box there. Under Brightness, choose 10% brightness (enough for me personally). Under Screen time-out, choose 1 minute (too short is quite irritating when it dims too often).

Power-saving mode
Image from cdn-static.cnet.co.uk
Personally, I won't check System Power Saving because it slows down the phone a lot.

Quick Drag-Down Settings
Quick Drag-Down Settings
Image from cdn-static.cnet.co.uk

Perhaps one of the best features of the Android Gingerbread is the Quick Drag-Down Settings, which allows the users to change their settings with one touch.

Go to Desktop page --> Touch the black bar on the top --> Drag down the bar

From here, you can press the buttons to activate / deactivate your Wi-Fi, Bluetooh, GPS, Sound and Auto rotation functions.

Flight Mode
Flight Mode @ Phone options
Image from img.gadgetian.com
Definitely the best feature on this phone is the Flight Mode. If you are still want to use your phone in the middle of the night as an alarm clock for example, don't mind there are no incoming calls or internet connections and you don't want to power off the phone, you can simply:

Power / Flight Mode button
Image from mos.futurenet.com
Hold the power button on the right of the phone for 1 second --> choose Flight Mode. What is really cool about this Flight Mode is that the phone will consume less than 2% of the power in 9 hours! I use it when I am away teaching a class to conserve the power on my phone as I won't be able to pick up calls or use the 3G anyway but switching off the phone on and off will consume more power.
