Technology: Galaxy Note II Q & A -- Part 1

Sorry for yet another Galaxy Note II entry, I am writing another big big entry on another topic, but since my readers found the previous entries really useful and questions kept pouring in, I want to do my best to help, so readers who are not getting a Note II, please just bear with me.

Question 1:

Why is it that Note II GT-N7100 has radio but Note II LTE GT-N7105 doesn't have?

This has to do with the compatibility of the kernel. Right now I have AOKP custom rom installed on my radio-capable Galaxy S2, but the radio is also missing because the kernel doesn't allow. Originally, the solution is to use Spirit FM Radio to reactivate the radio, but it doesn't work on the Note II LTE this time. The only way is to wait for a firmware update to reactivate the radio, either stock or custom.

The XDA Developers are among the best Android developers in the world, many Android tool books on sale in book stores are heavily referenced to XDA forum.

I wonder if anyone has written a book which is referenced to my tutorial?


Question 2:

When I used the earlier Android phones, the browsers can show Flash websites, why is it that Note II now cannot?

This is because Adobe has officially announced that it will not be supporting any mobile platforms, never on iOS, now not even on Android. But that doesn't mean we cannot have it on Note II or future phones.

XDA Senior Member Lucidmike has a page sharing a very easy way to retrieve this function.

The steps are as follow:

Step 1: Download the apk file to your device and install when finished. (No rooting necessary.)
Step 2: Open up any browser, except Chrome.
Step 3: Enjoy.

If you are not sure how to do it, just follow the video below.

Question 3:

Why is it that my Note II LTE GT-N7105 uses up battery faster than my friend's Note II GT-N7100?

Again, different kernel and different signal receiver. If you are on a 4G data plan, Note II LTE will use more battery juice to process the super high-speed  incoming data. But if you are on a 3G plan, then the battery will naturally last longer. Actually, compared with any Galaxy phones, Note II already has 3,100 mAh of battery, the largest capacity of all.

My advice is, get an extra battery if you do use 4G plan, not that you really need it as I believe the battery can last for one day but just in case you get lost in the wild.

Question 4:

The Multi-Window can only allow some 3rd party apps, can I add Whatsapp or LINE, or even Angry Birds into that Multi-Window?

XDA Developers have the solution. XDA Senior Member goddamnit has created a mod for custom ROMs for a specific firmware version (Check your firmware version under Settings -- > About device --> Build Number)

The good news is, as of today, if you have Note II GT-N7100 your firmware is the stock firmware (meaning directly out from box without any changes) of build number ending with "LJ3", then you can also enjoy this mod without changing to Custom ROM.

For me, I'm using Note II LTE GT-N7105, build number ending with "LJ4", so I can only use this mod if my phone is running custom ROM.


Question 5:

I'm a noob! I don't know how to upgrade to the Multi-Window function that you have talked about in your previous blog entry, what can I do?

My student Ella went to a Samsung shop and got the staff to upgrade it for her. You may want to try that out if you don't want to do the firmware flashing by yourself.

I too want to give this topic a little break, if there are newer questions, I will answer them all together after a few more entries.

Multi-Window Gone Missing? Don't worry! Here's the solution

Following the request from Ella, I decided to write an extended article on Technology: Advanced Samsung Galaxy Note II Mess Around.

Messing around with a smartphone can be time-consuming, and the most time-consuming part for me is to find trust-worthy resources, otherwise your phone could be "bricked".

In order not to provide the wrong kind of information for my readers, I have to try the methods myself. Here's what I have tried and confirmed working.

What I have realised is that the Samsung Galaxy Note II (GT-N7100) and the LTE version (GT-N7105) are slightly different in the sense that the Multi Windows feature ISN'T YET available on some LTE version. I got mine LTE from One2Free, apparently falls under this category, and since the official update OTA (Over-The-Air) update isn't available yet, I decided to go online and search.


UPGRADE TO MULTI-WINDOW

Android Soul happens to have that answer for me, titled N7105ZHALJ4 — Samsung Galaxy Note 2 LTE Update for Hong Kong brings multi-window feature. You can follow the step by step instructions as written on that page, or you can follow the steps by Zedomax in the video below, except that you should download these files instead,

Download Stock Firmware (Hong Kong version):
Filename: N7105ZHALJ4_N7105ZZHALJ4_TGY.zip | Size: 991MB

I know it does say "How to Root Galaxy Note 2" in the video, but you are NOT going to root the phone, so  please don't worry. I use this video because it is basically the same steps, except that after you run Odin 3, under PDA, you choose this N7105ZHALJ4_N7105ZZHALJ4_TGY.zip.

One benefit for common users is that this will not void your warranty as this is an official Samsung update, and because you have NOT rooted your phone, there is really nothing to worry about. This is also a great practice for those of you who want to either get faster updates or want to learn to root your phones in the future, because the steps are essentially the same.

ROOTING LTE

If you really wanted to root your Note II LTE, then you just repeat the steps in the video but with this PDA file instead.

GT-N7105 — CF-Auto-Root-t0lte-gtn7105.zip (13.1 MB)

I have already rooted my phone so this method is safe.

There is a Toolkit which combines many different options for advanced users, called Galaxy Note2 TOOLKIT V2.0 GSM, and it will support LTE version as well. I haven't tried this yet, but it does have many supporters.


CUSTOM ROMS

Right now, since N7105 is still very new, there aren't too many custom roms to choose, there is one [ROM][GT-N7105]N7105ZHALJ4 deodexed Rom V1.0 [Rooted], which is essentially the same as the original version but it is deodexed, meaning that it will open up the path to further modification, such as allowing multi-window for ALL apps on your phone!!! ([MOD][10.Nov.'12]MulitWindow with unlimited apps for deodex rom )

However, at this moment, I think I will want to wait for the developers to release a perfect "Unlimited App Multi-Window ROM" for the N7105. I will keep an eye on the forums and I will update you when the good news arrives.

Hello there, recently I got my hands on a Samsung Galaxy Note II, and of course I couldn't wait to mess around with it. And as a reasonable XDA developer, the first thing I did was to root the phone, to do so, XDA developer senior member Zedomax is the expert.

Rooting a phone has never been faster and easier. After rooting the phone, the best thing to do is to make a backup of the entire phone. Some users like to keep a clean copy of their software but you can also wait till all you favourite apps and email accounts have been added before doing so.

Personally, I renew my backup whenever I find my phone functioning at its best.

After doing all these stuff, it was time to mess with the unique features this phone offers, the best videos tutorial definitely came from Samsung Mobile on YouTube,

The first to learn is of course the features which allow true multitasking for multitaskers like me,

then  move on to all those S Pen functions,

Here's an extra time news, Samsung actually reported a rapid growth in sales of Galaxy SIII after iPhone 5 was launched, leading to the recording-breaking profit in Q3 2012, even Kevin Packingham, chief product officer of Samsung Mobile in the U.S. said:

“I was shocked by the numbers. I thought: ‘What the heck is going on here?’”

Android Authority ascribed the success of the SIII to the unimpressive design of the iPhone 5, driving the disappointed potential smartphone buyers to purchase SIII. Like I said, competition is a great thing to have, don't you agree? I think Samsung does.

Photography & Opinions: Fun Of Sport Videography

Sorry guys, soon after I have completed my first official video, came the second one above. I have devoted another weekend on video making and movie editing, which is why I am kind of behind my schedule for blogging. I will try to get back on track after this, and I believe I should be able to since my students won't be having another match any time soon. I must say though, videography, especially filming my students, is really addictive.

For me, filming the subjects when they play football at high speed is never as exciting as watching it live. Even with a tripod this time I still had to take great care of many technical aspects, one of which requires constant attention is manual focusing. For most cases, auto-focusing does work, but with so many players on the field jumping up and down, running left and right, the camera cannot understand which one I actually intend to zoom into, which is why I had to do it manually.

Another technique is quick panning, usually needed when the ball is kicked to high. Too quick and I will lose the ball movements in between, but too slow and I will easily make the viewer dizzy. To make sure that the panning is at its right pace, looking at the LCD display on my camera is almost always necessary.

The best part actually comes when the post-production begins, the time that I will sit in front of the computer and work with Adobe Premiere Pro CS6. It is really a joy to use once I have picked up the skills, and after making the first video which took around 5 hours, the second one barely took me a little more than an hour.

Matching my students' best moves to the beat of the song was invigorating! The selection of useful video was already the most tedious process, afterwards it was just cutting up videos and rearranging the fragments, pretty simple task.

What I have learnt from using the software is surprisingly more than just pressing buttons. I have learnt the difference types of video formats and their effect on the length of the encoding time, the file size and the image quality.

For example, for AVI uncompressed 1080p, a 5-minute video will be over 30Gb!!! But FLV 1080p will only be 258Mb and has more or less the same video image quality. In order words, FLV is many times better for web upload than AVI. As for the encoding time, I didn't actually time it but I feel that FLV is faster because writing 30Gb of data onto the hard disk also takes considerable amount of time. I happen to have come across these knowledge at the surface when I search and download videos from the internet, but they are never as clear to me now that I am a real video-maker / producer.

A little word for Adobe, it would be so much easier for users if the next Premiere can show the estimated video size even before exporting, then I will know which one I should choose even if I don't know the minor differences in file format.

Finally, I feel that the best part about making videos is the satisfaction from producing one awesome product and then getting great response from the viewers. Many students gave me thumbs up while some can who had their share of slow-motion and describe their special skills to me.

After making these videos, I can feel how much love I have for my students which was unaware of, I hope that they can feel that too. Some day when they grow up and look back at the videos, they may remember that there was an English teacher who supported them every "match" of the way.

Hey guys, this is the first official Locky's English Playground video production.

What do you think about it? 

I must say, as this is the first time making a video, it is acceptable, but the shaking was really quite serious, having a tripod next time round would really help; however, to fix the shaking with software, it is actually impossible.

In Adobe Premiere Pro CS6, there is a function for stabilising video shakes, as demonstrated from 8:49 of the following video,

basically, the Premiere calculates the differences in between frames and then crop out the extra edges (as shown at 10:16). Pretty amazing! In fact, I wanted to do just that but it will take a very long time to render on my 4 year old PC. I will probably make a better version when I buy a new PC, but this will be another post entry some days later.

What is more amazing is that when I started uploading the videos to YouTube I discovered that YouTube has this option to stabilise the video too! Really does save the viewers' eyesights.

I decided to keep the shakiness because it turns out that YouTube cropped out a bit too much. Then again, if my shooting skill had been better, I wouldn't have to use stabilization at all.

MichaelTheTutor has a good video on the necessary skills on sports photography, too bad that I haven't watched it before I took the video, but I can definitely use the techniques and settings advice next time.

I have dug up a number of interesting articles for reading these two days. The first one is titled, What does Starbucks say of your status? from South China Morning Post, in summary it talks about the kind of suits you can meet up if you hang around the right coffee shops like Starbucks, and if you want to run into some top level management hot shots, you should spend some 30 bucks to get a cup of coffee. Now if I am working in the finance field, I might want to do that, but I can't say for sure really because I'm not. Interesting suggestions though, worth reading.

Georgia Aquarium in the U.S. plans to import 18 wild-catch beluga whales, their reason, for research and education, adding whale protections and sustainability into the equation, most people will say, "yeah, that sounds like a good idea!" But this article tells us that despite "saving" these endangered animals from their potential dangers in the wild, the belugas actually have much shorter lifespan than they do in the wild.

Think of this whole idea of animals in captivity as alien abduction whereby we human beings are the aliens to these highly intelligent mammals, then it will all make sense when the scientists say we are the one who drive them mad and eventually lead them to their death. Inevitable!

Wired Science has this article, Georgia Aquarium’s Beluga Whale Capture Comes Under Fire which has many insightful viewpoints, definitely a must-read if you believe you should do something for these poor animals.

Talking about great articles, the New York Times has one on Apple.

We know that Apple has recently fired Scott Forstall, a Steve Jobs' disciple, because he wasn't willing to take the blame of the recent Apple Maps catastrophe, but how will that affect the development of the iPhone, iPad software and therefore, the future of the iDevice owners? Authors of the article Apple Shake-Up Could End Real-World Images went the extra mile to research the history of the successor Jonathan Ive and predict the direction of Apple in this post-Jobs era. Exciting article to read! And that final line was the best,

“Clean edges, flat surfaces will likely replace the textures that are all over the place right now.”

Apple fans, take note, you might be owning the last device before Apple's paradigm shift.

Lastly, not an article I am recommending, but just find it funny to know that Microsoft's innovative Windows 8 tiling interface which was dubbed to be the next big thing in desktop computer is being sued almost immediately for an infringement of a concept patent owned by another company since the 1990s.

Yesterday, I was still appreciating Windows 8 in the new Samsung ATIV ad,

turns out that now I'm once again overwhelmed by another news on intellectual property (IP) lawsuit.

I have used Windows 8 Developer Preview and at first I thought it was nice to have something new, but 5 minutes later I was forced to switch back to the tradition Window 7 layout. XDA Elite Recognized Developer Adam Outler has the truth,
